Narrowboat Farm

Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland

Narrowboat Farm is a trip back in time, growing fruits and vegetables the way it was done before industrialisation.

Nestled along the banks of the Union Canal, the environmentally-friendly market garden protects natural habitats and nurtures Mother Nature. The rewards are plentiful, with beets, broccoli, squash, tomatoes, carrots, and more available for purchase in the local community. In the 1820s, farmers used the canals to transport their goods to market, and Narrowboat is bringing new life to that tradition.

Farm owner Iain Withers lives on a narrowboat on the channel, as so do many of the people involved in the project. While Withers and his team have a firm foot in the past, they also take pride in the innovative spirit they have at the micro-farm. They hope to create a better future for all; in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic, they are inspiring others to grow food at home. Narrowboat has created a Facebook group with educational videos to help families convert sections of their lawns into vegetable gardens.

The farm also encourages people to take a much-needed break from their fast-paced lives. Growing nutritious food takes time, and so does meandering down a canal.

Slow down, and reap the benefits.
