Farmer Offers Chance to Pick Your Own Hemp to Make CBD Medicine

A farm in Maine is offering people a unique opportunity; a chance to pick their own hemp from the fields to make their own CBD medicine.

It’s a slight diversion from the more typical establishments that allow customers to pick their own strawberries, for example. And while Sheepscot General Store and Farm does that too, it’s breaking the mold with its fields of hemp.

Of course, picking your own hemp wouldn’t be possible without the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill.

The bill was signed into law last year and removes hemp from its original Schedule 1 class drug status. Although heavily regulated, it is now legal to cultivate the plant in the US.

Located in Whitefield, ME, Sheepscot is devoting three acres to growing high CBD hemp organically. The crop is free of chemicals and contains under 0.3% THC, meaning the medicine made with this type of cannabis plant comes without the high.

Folks who are interested can make ‘u-pick’ appointments for guided tours throughout September and October. They can also attend workshops teaching the basics of making hemp tinctures and salves.

Hemp Education

A whole new world is opening when it comes to hemp, with CBD even making it into some college classrooms this fall.

Vermont Technical College in Randolph is offering the state’s first program focusing on the production of hemp.

The three-part course combines classroom lectures with site tours. Students will learn all about producing hemp and CBD, the laws and challenges associated with it, as well as the history of the cannabis plant.

Miracle Medicine?

The potential of CBD as a medicine is in the constant spotlight.

According to a report from Harvard University, there is strong scientific evidence that it is incredibly effective at reducing the frequency of seizures in children with epilepsy.

More research is needed, but CBD is also commonly used to help people suffering from insomnia, anxiety, and chronic pain.
