Precision Growing US 67

Welcome to another edition of Garden Culture, where we tackle the concept of Precision Gardening.

Precision Gardening is all about understanding that plants thrive best when every environmental factor, from temperature and humidity to location, is dialed in. Whether you work with a small indoor grow tent or a sprawling outdoor plot, zeroing in on your microclimate and mastering various elements and techniques can transform your garden.

Vapor Pressure Deficit and Precision Growing

Dustan Mclean has given us two articles explaining Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD), providing a better understanding that it’s something actionable that can seriously help your plants grow. Because VPD isn’t a chart on the wall, it’s a moving relationship between plant, air, and intent. The overall lesson is that observation matters more than rigid targets.

Microbes…

If you want to know how microbes fit into the mix, don’t miss Haley Nagasaki’s interview, “Professional POV with Colin Bell: Unlocking Phosphorus with Mammoth P.” I also contribute my viewpoint in “Why I Won’t Grow Without Mycorrhizae,” where I explain why using it isn’t optional.

The Gardener’s Role

Jennifer Cole writes about microclimates in the garden, and how to locate, build, and use them to your plants’ advantage. Then there’s the human side of cultivation. In “Precision Gardening: The Art of Knowing by Noticing,” Anne Gibson asserts that personalized, onsite experiences and data are more accurate and reliable than any generalized algorithm or app. Marci Babineau shares her poignant journey in “Scattered Gardener,” reflecting on how the garden mirrors the unpredictability and cycles of life and loss.

Most of the time, better growing comes from better questions…and experience.
