Rebel Farmer Ed is a captivating name for a grower, and when coupled with skill and energy, it forms an effective combination to do good and have fun. Initially branding himself as a ‘punk drunk tree surgeon’ from London, Ed relocated to Brook in Kent with his young family in 2015, seeking a different future. Applying permaculture design principles to a three-acre homestead in the Kent Downs AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), he established a market garden from the ground up. In 2019, Rebel Farmer was founded to connect and engage with the broader community. Emphasising educational experiences around compost creation, promoting the no-dig method for growing, and advocating regenerative agriculture concepts, Ed is committed to improving the health of people and the planet.
A community weaver and grassroots activist, Ed is determined to inspire change and believes localism is the answer to many modern-day problems. To preach this, he dived into communal growing, understanding what it takes to provide bountiful produce with earth care in mind. Leading up to owning the farm, he extensively experimented with diverse polyculture produce and initiated volunteer and community-led growing projects.
His produce is now enjoyed by many individuals and utilised by chefs to champion local and nutritious options. Ed also directs a Kent Food Hub CIC, distributing food across East Kent.
Collaborating with schools and universities for what he terms a right to real food and subsequent curriculum, change is a truly rebellious act in today’s world. It’s hard not to agree.
