Ohio City Farm

If it weren’t for the stunning views of the downtown skyline, you’d probably never believe that Ohio City Farm is located in…well, a city! Sitting on 5 acres of green space leased from the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority, this urban farm boosts the local food economy by providing Cleveland residents with fresh, healthy produce grown close to home. It’s run by Re-Source Cleveland, a nonprofit that helps immigrants adjust to life in the United States. Re-Source programs include youth mentoring, sports, arts, academic support, driver’s education, social services, and Ohio City Farm, which offers fair-wage employment and training for newcomers. Many of the farm workers have agricultural experience in their home countries and bring a unique skill set with them. The employment opportunities at Ohio City Farm offer familiarity and a wholesome work environment that helps newcomers feel welcome and acclimate to their new surroundings. Since 2010, seven different countries of origin have been represented on the farm team!

Locally grown food from Ohio City Farm

While not certified organic, the farm follows organic practices to grow a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables, including leafy greens, root vegetables, tomatoes, squash, peppers, and fresh herbs. The multicultural background of many of the farm’s workers lends itself to veggie varieties unique to the U.S., such as Asian long beans, Thai chilies, and speciality radishes and turnips. Cleveland residents can enjoy the delicious produce through a CSA program, wholesale restaurant partners, or via the Farm-to-Community Food Donation Program. The 20-week CSA has multiple options to accommodate different family sizes and features items grown on the farm and some sourced from nearby growers. There’s also a 10-week flower CSA that offers fresh-cut seasonal blooms harvested locally at Bay Branch Farm, and a 6-week Fall share including sweet autumn veg. Becoming a member of the Ohio City Farm CSA helps pay the team’s wages and the costs associated with growing the produce. For the 2026 season, Re:Source Cleveland pledges that CSA shares will provide employment for 7 full-time farmers from refugee backgrounds and 2 support staff.

Volunteer opportunities take place in a friendly, inclusive environment and involve harvesting, planting, seeding, weeding, washing, packing, and distributing CSA boxes. It’s challenging work, but it comes with some serious veggie benefits! Ohio City Farm also welcomes schools and other groups for educational tours to learn about the land’s history, sustainable growing practices, and Re-Source Cleveland’s broader mission to foster a sense of belonging and purpose for people starting over in the United States.
