Rise and Root Farm

New York, New York, USA

What happens when a group of four women comes together to grow food? Magical things. Rise & Root Farm is committed to connecting the rural and urban communities in the Big Apple through gardening and farming.

Karen Washington, Lorrie Clevenger, Jane Hodge, and Michaela Hayes are busy spreading the word: access to fresh and nutritious food is a fundamental human right. Together, they strive for food justice and equality; nobody should go hungry. Unfortunately, quality produce isn’t always easy to find in a big city, especially not in low-income and minority communities.

Rise & Root Farm educates people at urban farms and community gardens, building a strong local food economy along the way. They believe that anyone can grow their own, and with a few preservation techniques, it is possible to eat locally year-round.

The produce they grow on the farm, including salad greens, herbs, and heirloom tomatoes, are all sold online and at Manhatten’s Union Square Greenmarket. Great food; fantastic message.

Making New York City a better place to live.
